Preparing for Surgery
Surgery is an unnerving procedure for both guardian and patient. There is need to prepare for surgery ahead properly. At HEENT Institute it is our responsibility to ensure that your surgical experience is safe.
Ensuring Safety Has Three Phases
Rest adequately and familiarise yourself with the instructions given by your surgeon.
During your stay at the hospital, we will leave no stone unturned to keep you safe, free from complications and comfortable. We request you to follow the fundamental guidelines given below to prepare yourself for surgery.
Pre-operative Phase
- Get all your doubts clarified about the procedure from your operating doctor
- For a day surgery, make sure you have adult supervision to accompany you and drive you home post-surgery even if you are being operated under local anaesthesia
In case, you do not have anybody to accompany you, we would be more than willing to reschedule your procedure to fit your need.
Children under 18 years can be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian into the operating room until they are asleep. - If you fall ill one day prior to the surgery, call your doctor immediately
- Ensure maximum hygiene before you get admitted to minimize the possibility of infections
If you have an open wound inform the attending nurse to assess the wound to rule out infection sources. - If you discover that you may be pregnant post-diagnosis of your surgery, inform the surgeon immediately
On Day of Surgery
- Follow all instructions given by the surgeon/anaesthetist, such as the consumption of food or water prior to your surgery
- Ensure you take the medications prescribed by your doctor
- Leave jewellery and valuables at home
What You Can Carry
- Medications you take every day, along with dosage and frequency
- Asthma inhaler in case you need to use one
- Reading glasses, hearing aid, and dentures in case you need to use any of these
